GMC Amritsar, performs following broad functions:

• Imparts teaching to medical students towards attaining the degree of MBBS and Postgraduate training leading to MD, MS and Super specialization. Teaching includes theory and practical training.
• Research in medical and allied fields.
• Training in various paramedical courses.
• Provision of tertiary health care to people living in and around this region
• Provision of emergency service including trauma and disaster management.

The college is affiliated to Baba Farid University of Health Sciences, Faridkot. The admissions to the state quota seats of undergraduate and postgraduate courses and para-medical courses of the college are regulated through the University.
